Implementations and applications based on IEC Standards such as IEC 61850 (Communication networks and systems for power utility automation) and IEC 61400-25 (Wind turbines) are growing faster than expected worldwide. However, many systems still lack adequate cyber-physical security measures. To meet the exploding demand for secure and interoperable IEC-based solutions, this new course provides the most up-to-date, neutral and practice-oriented knowledge – both for brownfield and greenfield projects.
IEC 61850 is officially recognized by the IEC as a core standard for the Smart Grid, forming the backbone of modern digital substations and cyber-secure automation systems. You will learn how to apply conformant and non-conformant products in substations, power generation, condition monitoring, decentralized energy resources, Smart Grids, SCADA, engineering with SCL, substation-to-control-center links and RTUs. Special focus is placed on cyberphysical security (IEC 62351), with practical guidance on the crucial do’s and don’ts. A key message to all people involved: successful projects require teamwork between OT, ET, IT, and security experts.
In addition, the course will frame IEC 61850 within the European cybersecurity landscape, including the EU Cybersecurity Act (2019) and the newly adopted Cyber Resilience Act (2024). Both regulations impose new requirements on product security, vulnerability management, and certification of digital components — directly affecting IEDs, engineering tools and substation communication devices.
30 years after the start of IEC 61850 standardization, the series has become the cyber-secure backbone of power utility automation and protection worldwide. The benefit of the standard depends on comprehensive knowledge and on understanding how to reach interoperable and resilient systems. Many utilities have already learned that system integration is the decisive challenge.
This 5-day comprehensive course therefore combines modern IEDs, digital twins, up-to-date tools and demo software for automation, protection, monitoring, engineering (SCL), SCADA, Smart Grids and RTUs – all in the light of real project experience from the past 20 years. With more than 130 years of combined expertise, the lecturers go far beyond theory and vendor presentations: you will learn directly from those who shape the standards and apply them in practice.
