REPORT SUMMARY

This three-volume report examines the application of the Utility Communications Architecture (UCA) Version 2 by the gas industry to standardize communications for monitoring and control.

Volume 3 provides specific guidelines for developing gas industry UCA client applications. A "front-end" data acquisition and control system is needed as an interface between the remote UCA devices and the enterprise-wide utility applications, including SCADA and other legacy applications. This report defines guidelines for the specification of such a front-end system, termed the Utility Communications Architecture (UCA) Data Acquisition and Control (DAC) System, or UCA DAC System. These guidelines define the functional requirements for the UCA DAC system, covering the UCA DAC Client services, the UCA DAC Data Repository, and the UCA DAC Server services. The guidelines also discuss the need for migration from existing front-ends, flexibility and efficiency requirements, performance needs, security capabilities, and data management.
