New Siemens A&D Industrial Ethernet Components:

Optical Switch Modules (OSM, Version 2)
and Electrical Switch Modules (ESM)
enable cost-effective set-up of switched networks at 100 Mbit/s.

(complete document, 6 pages (German), pdf file, some 3 MByte)

    • The OSM and ESM serve to set up Industrial Ethernet networks using switching technology.
    • Connection of modules to one another (backbone) either using glass fiber optics or twisted pair cables at 100 Mbit/s
    • Connection of terminals or network segments using up to 6 twisted pair ports (as either 9-pin sub-D or RJ45 connections) at 10 Mbit/s or 100 Mbit/s
    • Bridging of distances of up to 18 km between 2 OSMs using single-mode fiber optic
    • Integrated redundancy manager allows rapid media redundancy, even for large networks
    • Simple network configuration and network extension without complicated design rules or parameterization
    • Prepared for SNMP and web-based management OSMs with 2 fiber optic ports are required to set up an optical ring.
    • Electrical rings are set up with 2 twisted pair ports on the ESM. The data rate in the ring is 100 Mbit/s, up to 50 OSMs or ESMs can be used per ring.
    • In addition to the 2 ring ports, OSMs and ESMs have another 6 ports (with a choice of ITP or RJ45 interfaces), to which either terminals or network segments can be connected.
    • Several rings can be connected to one another on a redundant basis using the integrated standby function.
    • The functionality of the modules can be monitored by the signalling contact. OSMs and ESMs are also prepared for integration into SNMP (Simple Network Management System) and Web-based network management systems.
    • The OSM and ESM can be upgraded and parameterized to the latest firm-ware versions via the serial port.
