Andrea Bonetti
...is Chair of IEC TC 95 and senior specialist power system protection and IEC 61850 at Megger
He is an electrotechnical engineer with over 30 years of international experience in power system protection and IEC 61850 applications.
Since 1993, he has worked with ABB (today Hitachi Energy), STRI, and currently with Megger as a senior specialist in relay protection and IEC 61850 applications. Based in Sweden since 1998, he has held roles spanning protection engineering, test equipment development, and consulting. Since 2008, Andrea has trained several thousand engineers — mainly from DSOs and TSOs — in relay protection and IEC 61850 applications. He is a guest lecturer at KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm and a teacher for STF – Sweden’s independent training institute for the power industry – where he teaches relay protection commissioning based on the use of Digital Twins. Andrea holds two patents related to IEC 61850 test methods and serves as Chairman of IEC TC 95, developing functional standards for protection functions and IEC 61850 profiles for protection applications, and as Vice Chair of the IEEE PAR 3416 project “Guide for Test Sets and Tools for Testing Protective Relays”. He continues to support TSOs and utilities in specification, testing, commissioning, and troubleshooting of IEC 61850-based protection systems.
