IEC 61850

Communication networks and systems in substations and beyond

It is our intent that you - the domain expert - add to the list of Q&A.

Question and Answers related to mappings

The following figure shows the conceptual mapping of various models defined in IEC 61850-7-2
to IEC 61850-8-1, IEC 61850-9-1, and IEC 61850-9-2.

Comprehensive Overview of the many different layers in the definition of IEC 61850: Models, services, mapping to MMS services and protocols, ANS.1, ASN.1. BER, ... This presentation provides a lot of details and and examples. This is the most compact presentation on the various layers. (2010-08-02)

What happens if an IED (with a specific MAC Address) is replaced by another IED (with a different MAC Address)? Has any other IED to be reconfigured with this new MAC Address? (2005-03)

What is the difference in IEC 61850 between part 8 mappings and part 9 mappings? Part 8 is called mapping for station bus, part 9 is called mapping for process bus. Is that correct? (2002-10)

What is the communication network topology specified in IEC 61850? (2002-10)

What is the difference between IEC 61850-9-1 and IEC 61850-9-2? (2002-10)

The abstract model for the transmission of sampled values is used for the digital output of voltage and current transformers. IEC 61850-9-1 seems to fulfill all the requirements to connect one measuring point (voltage and current of a three-phase system) to protection, control and metering. Why should we use IEC 61850-9-2 or a bus topology combining IEC 61850-9-2 with IEC 61850-8-1? (2002-10)

Does MMS / UCA 2.0 (i.e. IEC 61850) run over standard TCP/IP? Yes! (2002-10)

Can other devices run at the same time using TCP/IP? Yes! (2002-10)
Comprehensive IEC 61850/UCA 2.0/MMS evaluation Kit.
A demo version of a IEC 61850/UCA 2.0/MMS server device that can be used to communicate with MMS and http/XML can also be downloaded.

The client/server services in IEC 61850-7-2 are mapped to MMS (ISO 9506). Is there an alternative mapping to other protocols? See entry in IEC 61850 block for details.
